Most recent Android smartphones include a gaming mode (also called Game Booster, Game Turbo or Game Space depending on the brand). On iPhone, Focus mode can achieve a similar result. These features have been around for several years, but many mobile gamers do not use them, either because they are unaware they exist or because they doubt their real usefulness. In practice, gaming mode changes several phone settings that have a direct impact on the gaming experience.
Gaming mode is not just a shortcut. It actively modifies your smartphone's behaviour on several levels simultaneously.
Notification blocking. This is the most immediately noticeable effect. In gaming mode, notifications (messages, emails, social media, reminders) are blocked or reduced to a discreet banner that does not cover the game screen. No more WhatsApp banner appearing in the middle of a competitive match, no more notification making you tap the screen in the wrong place.
CPU and GPU optimisation. Gaming mode tells the operating system to give priority to the current game. The processor and GPU receive more resources, background apps are paused or limited, and the system reduces maintenance tasks (syncing, automatic updates) that consume CPU. On smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite or Dimensity 9400, this optimisation can translate into a 10 to 15 per cent framerate gain in demanding games.
Touch latency reduction. Some gaming modes increase the screen's touch sampling rate. A screen sampling at 240 Hz instead of 120 Hz detects your touches twice as often, reducing the delay between the moment your finger touches the screen and the moment the game reacts. For games that require fast reflexes such as FPS or rhythm games, this difference is measurable.
Navigation gesture blocking. In gaming mode, system navigation gestures (swiping from the edge to go back, swiping from the bottom to reach the home screen) are disabled or require a more deliberate gesture. This prevents accidental exits from the game when you make fast movements on the screen.
Network priority. Gaming mode can prioritise the game's network traffic over other applications. If a background app is downloading an update while you are playing online, gaming mode can limit its bandwidth to reduce your ping. Some gaming modes also let you lock the connection to Wi-Fi or 5G to avoid automatic switches that cause latency spikes.
Brightness and display management. Several gaming modes prevent auto-brightness from changing during gameplay (a brightness change mid-action can be distracting) and keep the screen refresh rate at its maximum (120 Hz, 144 Hz or 165 Hz depending on the phone) even when the battery is low.
The method depends on your phone brand. Samsung includes Game Booster, accessible from the game panel that appears when you launch a game, or from Settings under "Advanced features". Xiaomi and Redmi offer Game Turbo, accessible from the Security app or by swiping from the corner of the screen during a game. OnePlus and OPPO use Game Space (or Game Focus), which can be enabled from Settings or automatically when a recognised game launches. ASUS ROG Phone has Armoury Crate, the most comprehensive gaming mode on the market, with fan control, physical button mapping and per-game profiles.
On most Android phones, gaming mode launches automatically when you open a recognised game. You can also manually add applications to the game list if a game is not detected automatically.
Apple does not have a dedicated "gaming mode" in the way Android does. However, you can use Focus mode to create a custom "Gaming" profile that blocks notifications, calls and alerts during your gaming sessions. iOS already automatically optimises performance when a demanding game is running, but notification blocking is not automatic without configuring Focus mode.
To create it: Settings, Focus, tap the "+" to add a new mode, name it "Gaming", configure which contacts and apps are allowed to interrupt you (ideally none), and enable it manually before playing or set up an automation so it activates when you open a specific game app.
Gaming mode does not increase your phone's hardware capabilities beyond their specifications. It does not turn an entry-level phone into a gaming machine. If your phone has a 60 Hz screen, gaming mode will not push it to 120 Hz. If the processor is not powerful enough to run a game at 60 FPS, gaming mode will not fundamentally change that.
Gaming mode also does not reduce battery consumption. It is actually the opposite: by pushing the processor and GPU to peak performance, maintaining a high refresh rate and increasing the touch sampling rate, gaming mode consumes more battery than normal use. That is the price of performance.
Close background apps before launching your game, even with gaming mode enabled. The fewer apps in memory, the more resources the system has to allocate to the game. Connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz to reduce network latency if you play online. Disable Bluetooth if you are not using a controller or wireless earbuds, as Bluetooth uses CPU to manage connections. Keep your phone at a reasonable temperature: a phone that overheats activates thermal throttling, which reduces processor performance even in gaming mode. Playing in front of a fan or removing the phone case can help during long sessions.
Your smartphone's gaming mode is a free performance lever that many gamers overlook. It does not transform your phone, but it ensures all its capabilities are effectively dedicated to the game. Blocked notifications, optimised processor, reduced touch latency, accidental gestures eliminated: each adjustment is modest individually, but their combination produces a noticeably smoother and more responsive gaming experience.
